2016 Golden Globes – Who Should/Will Win

The Golden Globes are tonight and it is going to be a little different than most years.  Usually, the Globes don’t have a ton of say in the Oscar race.  From some questionable nominations (Johnny Depp being a double nominee for The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland in 2010) to some interesting winners (Avatar winning Best Picture -Drama over The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds), The Globes aren’t usually the greatest Oscar predictor.  This year, however, with the extremely wide-open Oscar race that we have, this could show us where some of the votes will be going and who are potential favorites.  So with that, here are my predictions for this year’s Golden Globes.

Walker

BEST SONG FROM A MOTION PICTURE

NOMINEES – “Love Me Life You Do” from Fifty Shades of Grey; “One Kind of Love” from Love & Mercy; “See You Again” from Furious 7; “Simple Song #3” from Youth; “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre

Some very good and very popular songs here.  I think it comes down to a battle of “Simple Song #3” from Youth and “See You Again” from Furious 7.  While “Simple Song #3” is incredibly powerful and haunting, “See You Again” is one of the most popular songs of the year and has the emotional punch for Paul Walker added to it.  Expect to see the dreadlocked Wiz Khalifa on stage.

WILL WIN – “See You Again”

SHOULD WIN – “See You Again”

8

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

NOMINEES – Carter Burwell, Carol; Alexandre Desplat, The Danish Girl; Ennio Morricone, The Hateful Eight; Daniel Pemberton, Steve Jobs; Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto, The Revenant

I loved the Steve Jobs score and thought it added a lot of emotion and intensity to the movie, especially since each act in the movie has a different score.  Carol‘s is also very powerful.  But, even if I didn’t love The Hateful Eight, Ennio Morricone delivers a perfect score.

WILL WIN – “The Hateful Eight”

SHOULD WIN – “Steve Jobs”

Saul

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

NOMINEES – The Brand New Testament, The ClubThe FencerMustangSon of Saul

Son of Saul takes this in a cake walk.  It is one of the best foreign language films I have ever seen and a truly moving and harrowing experience.  The other films should be happy with their nomination.

WILL WIN – Son of Saul

SHOULD WIN – Son of Saul

insideout1

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

NOMINEES – AnomalisaThe Good Dinosaur, Inside Out,  The Peanuts Movie, Shaun The Sheep Movie

I loved The Peanuts Movie, but it has no shot.  Anomalisa could possibly have a chance if The Globes want to get daring, but I doubt they will.  Inside Out will win it.  It is just too good and a return to form for Pixar.

WILL WIN – Inside Out

SHOULD WIN – Inside Out

BigShort

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE

NOMINEES – Emma Donohue, Room; Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer, Spotlight; Charles Randolph and Adam McKay, The Big Short; Aaron Sorkin, Steve Jobs; Quentin Tarantino, The Hateful Eight

This is quite the battle, as I can see any of these nominees winning.  The Globes love Aaron Sorkin, as do I.  His screenplay is probably the best of the year.  Tarantino would add a spark to the ceremony, as would Adam McKay and The Big Short.  But Spotlight might win the big prize, so it could pick this up too.  This is a doozy to pick.

WILL WIN – Adam McKay and Charles Randolph – The Big Short

SHOULD WIN – Aaron Sorkin – Steve Jobs

exmachina

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

NOMINESS – Jane Fonda, Youth; Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight; Helen Mirren, Trumbo; Alicia Vikander, Ex Machina; Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

Seeing as Vikander is double nominee for Ex-Machina and Lead Actress – Drama for The Danish Girl, I think The Globes will award her for great year.  She probably won’t win Lead Actress, so this will be her win.  Winslet would probably be on deck, as she is stellar going toe-to-toe with Fassbender.

WILL WIN – Alicia Vikander – “Ex-Machina”

SHOULD WIN – Alicia Vikander – “Ex-Machina”

Rocky

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

NOMINEES – Paul Dano, Love & Mercy; Idris Elba, Beasts of No Nation; Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies; Michael Shannon, 99 Homes; Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Rylance and Elba are the most nominated among other critics and awards circles compared to their fellow nominees.  Does that make one of them the favorite?  And as much as I love Michael Shannon, his film, I think, is too small.  I believe this will be the start of the Sly train, as the comeback story of the year and a magnificent performance are hard to pass up.

WILL WIN – Sylvester Stallone – Creed

SHOULD WIN – Sylvester Stallone – Creed

Train

BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

NOMINEES – Jennifer Lawrence, Joy; Melissa McCarthy, Spy; Amy Schumer, Trainwreck; Maggie Smith, The Lady in the Van; Lily Tomlin, Grandma

The year of Amy Schumer continues.  Schumer is a crowd favorite and deservedly so.  She’ll have to fight off veterean Lily Tomlin and her good friend Jennifer Lawrence for the prize though, but I think she will do that handedly.

WILL WIN – Amy Schumer – Trainwreck

SHOULD WIN – Amy Schumer – Trainwreck

Martian

BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

NOMINEES – Christian Bale, The Big Short; Steve Carell, The Big Short; Matt Damon, The Martian; Al Pacino, Danny Collins; Mark Ruffalo, Infinitely Polar Bear

Do The Big Short boys cancel each other out?  I think so, though Bale would have my vote between the two.  Pacino and Ruffalo were relatively surprise nominees (especially Ruffalo, who’s film was incredibly unseen).  This makes room for Matt Damon, who is a big reason The Martian succeeds, to get his Globe.

WILL WIN – Matt Damon – The Martian

SHOULD WIN – Christian Bale – The Big Short

Room

BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA

NOMINEES – Cate Blanchett, Carol; Brie Larson, Room; Rooney Mara, Carol;Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn; Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl

This is a two-horse race between Larson and Ronan.  Blanchett and Mara will cancel each other out and Vikander will win supporting.  I love both Larson and Ronan’s performances and would be happy if either won.  But, Room got a Best Picture – Drama nomination, where Brooklyn did not.  That’s where I’m leaning.

WILL WIN – Brie Larson – Room

SHOULD WIN – Brie Larson – Room

leo

BEST ACTOR – DRAMA

NOMINEES – Bryan Cranston, Trumbo; Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant;Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs; Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl; Will Smith, Concussion

It’s time for the Leo train to leave the station and start chugging along.  He’s won twice before and will certainly pick up another one here.  His only competition is Fassbender, who is just brilliant in Steve Jobs.

WILL WIN – Leonard DiCaprio – The Revenant

SHOULD WIN – Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs

Max1

BEST DIRECTOR

NOMINEES – Todd Haynes, Carol; Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant; Tom McCarthy, Spotlight; George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road; Ridley Scott, The Martian

This category is wild.  I think it comes down to Miller, McCarthy, and Scott.  Scott’s never won, Miller has made a huge comeback, and McCarthy made a film that is the definition of subtlety.  I think the HFPA will go with Miller’s comeback, but don’t be surprised if Scott’s name is called.

WILL WIN – George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road

SHOULD WIN – Tom McCarthy – Spotlight

Big-Short

BEST PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

NOMINEES – The Big Short, Joy, The MartianSpyTrainwreck

Joy, Spy, and Trainwreck are all great but all have no shot.  This will be between The Big Short and The Martian.  A couple months ago, this was The Martian‘s, even though it isn’t really a comedy.  But, The Big Short has come on super strong and has the star-power to win it.

WILL WIN – The Big Short

SHOULD WIN – The Big Short

Spotlight

BEST PICTURE – DRAMA

NOMINEES – CarolMad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Room, Spotlight

Room is too small and I think Carol is too artsy for the HFPA.  DiCaprio will be The Revenant‘s prize.  I never would have thought Mad Max could possibly win this, as it does have a great shot.  But, Spotlight is the one movie that is consistently nominated and consistently considered great.  I think this is the start of its road to the Oscars.

WILL WIN – Spotlight

SHOULD WIN – Spotlight
